Important Changes to
BSA YPT Policy Youth safety is the No. 1 concern of the BSA.
To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater
barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of
America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its
Youth Protection policies. Effective June 1, 2010:
·
Youth Protection training is required for all registered volunteers.
·
New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before they
submit an application for registration. The certificate of completion for
this training must be submitted at the time application is made and before
volunteer service with youth begins. -- Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered. To ensure these policies are fully implemented, please take the following steps:
·
If you have not taken Youth Protection training within the past two years,
please log on to
MyScouting and take the training. Be sure to have your member ID
number. The number can be found on your Boy Scouts of America membership
card.
·
If you do not know your member ID number, contact your unit leader or
committee chairman. Your council can also assist.
·
A person does not have to be a registered volunteer or have an ID number
to take Youth Protection training. To take the training, log in to
MyScouting and
create an account. From the MyScouting portal, click on E-Learning and
take the Youth Protection training. Upon completion, print a certificate
and submit it with an application or submit to the unit leader for
processing at the local council.
·
If you have taken Youth Protection training online but did not input your
member ID number, please log on to
MyScouting and
input your member ID in the My Profile section so the training will be
linked to your records.
·
If you have taken Youth Protection training within the past two years but
did not take the course online, log on to
MyScouting to
ensure your records are up-to-date, or contact your council for
verification that your Youth Protection training records are accurate. -- Finally, please share these important changes with other Scouters. To find out more about the Youth Protection policies of the Boy Scouts of America and how to help Scouting keep your family safe, see the Parent's Guide in any of the Cub Scouting or Boy Scouting handbooks, or go to www.scouting.org/Training/YouthProtection.aspx Thank you for your commitment to our nation's young people and to Scouting.
Sincerely,
James Terry

Pushmobile October 23
Get out the power tools out and start building your Pushmobile for the Cub
Scouts favorite event of the year.
A Pushmobile is a boy powered go-cart.
Cub Scout dens make their own Pushmobile.
Specific rules for designing the go-cart are found on the
registration form (additional help can be found in the Cub Scout Leader
"How-To-Book" pg 6-36). Six
boys work together as a team to push their Pushmobile through the course
to the finish line.
Check-in begins at 8:00 at San Jacinto
College.

Webelos Woods November 19-21 Get out your tents and
sleeping bags for the Webelos favorite event of the year.
Webelos Woods is a campout designed to introduce Webelos Scouts, each with
an adult family member, to the many outdoor adventures of Boy Scouting.
This awesome weekend event
consists of two
nights of camping and a full day of activities on Saturday.
Webelos camp together as patrols
(dens) and exercise the patrol-method of camping as much as possible.
Scouts check-in Friday evening and
set up their campsite. On
Saturday morning, Webelos Patrols compete in
fire building, knots, camping, outdoor cooking, scout skills, and first
aid.
The patrols are judged on Patrol Flag and Yell,
Leadership, Teamwork, Skill Demonstration and Scout Spirit.
On Saturday afternoon, patrols participate in fun activities with
area Troops & learn more advanced skills taught by local Boy Scouts.
Scouts break camp and depart Sunday morning.
Webelos get to meet the area
troops. Webelos and their
parents are encouraged to visit the troop campsites and meet the boys and
adult leadership. Just a few
reminders: each patrol needs
to bring two 5-gallon buckets of firewood (thumb size and smaller), all
camp fires need to be above ground, all items (including trash, ash, and
unburned firewood) must be removed when leaving.
Wood that has fallen to the ground may be used as firewood (so
bring your gloves and saws). Webelos
leaders are encouraged to attend October and November Roundtable and to
take Webelos Outdoor Leader Training to get helpful hints.

Tree Planting Service Project for 100th Anniversary SHAC has had a donation from Lamar & Scott Evans for 3500 one gallon live oak trees for September & October in commemoration of 100 years of Scouting. They are looking for units and/or Eagle/Hornaday candidates looking for a project to plant the trees. For Eagle/Hornaday candidates they should be willing to meet with their neighborhood association or local community government and a forester to plan the number and location of the trees to be planted and how they will be cared for until they are established. I believe that we can help locate forestry experts if the municipality doesn't have their own. We may also have some projects at El Rancho Cima, but we need to get with the area forester to make sure they are suited to that environment. All interested Scouts and units, please contact Glenn Buckley (grbuckley419@comcast.net) and give him an expression of interest, where the project would occur (if you have an idea for a location) and contact info. He’s also looking for anyone interested in helping with the logistics and guiding the Scouts/units.

The Pack also gathered up donations of toothpaste and
toothbrushes, dental floss, mouthwash, deodorant, hand soaps, lotion,
shampoo, and conditioner. We also donated several packages of hot cocoa
mix as well as 7 different magazine subscriptions and $100 from the
aluminum cans we recycled. The boys learned about what the Ronald McDonald House
does for the families and the kids who are battling cancer. Lucas
Rodriggs said that he did not realize that kids could get cancer just like
adults. He was glad that he was able to help out. We got a quick tour of
the facility and took some photos (see attached). The Ronald McDonald
House of Houston was very appreciative of the donation from the boys. YIS, Mike Rodriggs Cubmaster Pack 958

2010 Historical Merit Badges
***New***
For the 100th Anniversary Celebration, four vintage merit badges are
being released during the Centennial Year only to give Boy Scouts the
hands-on opportunity to experience the exciting past of BSA. These
merit badges closely resemble the original designs, however, they
carry a shiny gold thread border to be immediately identifiable as a
2010 Historical Merit Badge. These badges, first offered in 1911, can
be traced back to the origins of the BSA and the original merit badge
requirements are used whenever possible. The badges are: Carpentry,
Pathfinding, Signaller, Tracking. All can be used towards rank
advancement. The requirements will be posted at
www.scouting.org/100years
in mid February and must be completed by December 31, 2010.
Unit Leader Award of Merit
***New***
Background Quality unit leadership is the key to a quality unit program—and it leads to better Scout retention. Statistics show that if young people stay engaged in the program for at least five years, the BSA’s influence likely will stay with them for the rest of their lives. A quality Scouting experience will help keep Scouts in the program, and the Boy Scouts of America created the Unit Leader Award of Merit to recognize the quality unit leaders who make that happen. The Unit Leader Award of Merit replaces the Scoutmaster, Varsity Team Coach, and Venturing Crew Advisor award of merit programs. This new recognition has revised requirements and may be earned by Cubmasters as well. Form
Requirements The nominee must 1. Be a currently registered Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Coach, or Advisor who has served in that position at least 18 continuous months. 2. Meet the training requirements for the registered position. 3. Distribute a printed or electronic annual unit program plan and calendar to each family in the unit. 4. Have a leader succession plan in place. 5. Effectively use the advancement method so that at least 60 percent of the unit’s youth have advanced at least once during the last 12 months. 6. Cultivate a positive relationship with the chartered organization. 7. Project a positive image of Scouting in the community.
Nomination Procedure 1. The unit committee chair completes the Unit Leader Award of Merit Nomination Form on behalf of the unit committee. For Boy Scout troops, Varsity Scout teams, and Venturer crews, the nomination must include endorsement by the senior patrol leader, team captain, or crew president, respectively. 2. The unit or district commissioner certifies that the form is complete. 3. The unit submits the nomination form to the council for approval by the Scout executive and council commissioner or president.
The Award Upon receipt of the approved nomination form, the council may present the Unit Leader Award of Merit, which includes a certificate, square knot with the appropriate device, and a special unit leader emblem. Recognition of this achievement may be presented at appropriate district or council events, such as district or council leader recognition dinners, training events, and board meetings. The award may be presented for each program, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity, and Venturing, if the individual meets the requirements in each program. Only one knot is worn with the devices of each program that the award was earned in.
