Fall Popcorn

District Popcorn Kernal, Darrel Monroe

It’s simple…it’s fun…it’s profitable… The annual Trail's End popcorn sale in the fall provides a straight percentage of the gross sales going back units.  SHAC provides exciting prizes or performance incentives, giving your unit the opportunity to increase your percentage of profit.  With a proven, powerful product lineup and pricing plan, your unit will realize great profits.

Each unit should send a representative to the Popcorn Kickoff which has door prizes, plus get full information, sales materials, order forms, and prize brochures.  More.

Scout Fair Tickets

Selling Scout Fair tickets is a great way for your unit to very easily raise the necessary funds needed to operate a top quality program. Selling Scout Fair Value Packs can add thousands of dollars to your unit's treasury.  Unit who have a booth a Scout Fair earn a bigger percentage of their Scout Fair ticket sales.

The Houston Scout Fair is the biggest Scout Show in the nation.  Scouts from Tiger Cubs to Eagle Scouts will have a fabulous, fun filled day mingling with thousands of other Scouts and their families, participating in hundreds of hands-on activities (e.g., climbing walls, craft booths, monkey bridges, rubber band guns, making Gak, meetings astronauts), tasting gourmet camp-fare cooked by Scouts (e.g., cobbler, chili, turkey, bread), and taking home treasured bits of memorabilia at Reliant Arena.  You have to pay for parking and one Scout Fair ticket (which admits the entire family), but once you are inside, everything is free (unless you choose to purchase food).  The entire family and even friends considering joining scouts will have a great time.  Make sure you bring your camera, water bottle, comfortable walking shoes, and an emergency meeting point (because it’s huge).    More

Friends of Scouting

Every Unit is urged to host a brief Friends of Scouting (FOS) presentation during a meeting when you expect a high number of parents to be present, for example at a Court of Honor, Blue and Gold banquet, summer camp kick-off, or other high-attendance event, before your school's Spring Break. Our goal is 100% participation by every family, in an amount that is personally reasonable for them.

In order for the Sam Houston Area Council, Boy Scouts of America to operate on a monthly basis, it has to meet it's budget.  The Boy Scouts have fiscal responsibility just as any family or business.    The council must raise 46% of its annual budgetary needs.  This is known as Friends of Scouting (FOS).

CAMPING   The Sam Houston Area Council Camp facilities are 100% paid for. However,  when we add staff, meals, program materials and increased utilities as part of camping operations it is necessary to charge.  The Council underwrites about 50% of the cost for each boy attending camp.  Camping and activities revenues provide about 22% of the council's income.

UNITS BENEFIT   Without FOS, there would be no camps, Scout shops, recruiting materials, insurance, Council resources such as training videos, literature or a professional staff to help administer Scouting in the districts.

OTHERS BENEFIT TOO What many do not "see" are the additional programs funded by BSA such as the urban program provides leadership and program costs for inner city kids to get the Scouting experience.  Students with special needs are able to enjoy Scouting programs in many schools. Also value based career programs are offered on many campuses throughout the council.  A Scout is helpful.  Close to half of the youth we serve are not in traditional units.  Getting more kids into our "gang" rather than their gang can do a lot to help keep our communities vibrant.

In short, the Friends of Scouting supports programs, facilities, staff, communications and much more to help thousands of parents and leaders to effectively deliver the Scouting program.  In 2007, the Sam Houston Area Council will spend approximately $125 per registered youth member above and beyond national registration fee and local unit expenses to maintain the needed support for the Scouting program to be offered to the community.
