Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader

Trained leaders provide a quality, fun-filled program for boys and young men and young women. When leaders understand the whys and hows of Scouting, they are more effective in their roles and the youth win!   Scouting is a lifetime of learning.  Its a game with a purpose.  Scouting teaches skills not only to the youth, but also to its adult volunteers as well.  Training programs have been designed to teach each volunteer the keys to success in his or her position.

Training Awards (Knots)

Scouters may earn training awards for their contributions to Scouting.  Each award has training and tenure requirements plus additional requirements.   Tenure in a unit may not be applied concurrently towards more than one award.   A Progress Record card is used to track these requirements.   Download the latest official versions of the training award progress records

Excellence in Training Award

In our drive towards 100% trained leaders, SHAC has established a new award your Unit can earn.   A ribbon streamer will be awarded once during the calendar year to units achieving the goal of 75% direct contact leaders trained in their registered position. At the 100% level, you will further be awarded a plaque.  Cub Scout leaders are considered trained when they have completed Fast Start Training, New Leader Essentials, and the Cub Scout Leader Specific training for their position. Application.

Quality Leader Program

In May 2004, Bayshore kicked off a new, exciting Quality Leader Program.  Upon completion of the program you will receive a special patch to wear on your uniform.  There are 4 opportunities to earn the special patch:  Cub Scouter, Boy Scouter, District Committee, and District Commissioner.  Only 3 of the requirements (training) may have been earned before 5/04.  There are no time requirements to complete the award.  It may take some volunteers several years to earn the award.  Submit the completed form to your unit commissioners.  Awards are presented at the Bayshore Recognition Dinner in February.  Click here to view the requirements.

Trained Leader emblem
The trained emblem (patch) may be worn by all leaders, youth and adult, who have completed  Fast Start (for current position), Youth Protection, New Leader Essentials, and the Basic Specific Training appropriate to the current position. It may be worn only in connection with the emblem (patch) of office for which training has been completed.  more

Basic Training

Fast Start Training – for all adult leaders

Fast Start training is designed to provide newly recruited leaders the information and resources they need to conduct their first meeting – be it a den meeting, pack meeting, troop meeting, crew meeting, or committee meeting that they are in charge of.  Fast Start Training is completed online.

New Leader Essentials – for all adult leaders

This course is an introductory session that presents an overview of key components of the overall Scouting program.  Its goal is to help leaders from all program areas understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve.  Each leader completes New Leader Essentials only once.  (90 min)  Registration form (see CLSLT).

Youth Protection Training – for all adult leaders

The problem of child abuse has become one of the most significant problems facing our nation.  Youth Protection Training is based upon the policies and procedures BSA has developed to ensure that all volunteer leaders and parents are aware of the problem and that Scouting provides a safe environment for all participants.  This training is taken online and is required for leaders attending summer camp, winter camp, or day camp. YPT certification is good for two years from the date taken.  (30 min)

Leader Specific Training - for all adult leaders

LST provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role in the position for which he or she is registered.  Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies from course to course.  Leader Specific Training has been developed for the following positions and their assistants:

Cub Leader Registration Form:

Tiger Leaders

Den Leaders

Webelos Leaders

Cubmasters

Pack Committee Members and Committee Chair

Troop Committee Challenge - for Troop Committee Members

TCC is the leader specific training for troop committee members.  It has been developed to help troop committee members better understand their roles and responsibilities. Through hands-on learning and activities, this training will also enable troop committee members to better "deliver the promise" in support of the troop, Scoutmaster, and Scouts.   online

Supplemental Training

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation – for Cub Scout leaders and parents

BALOO teaches introductory camping skills and safety procedures that will insure a fun and safe camping experience for Cub Scout families.  Pack overnighters are required to be organized and led by an adult who has successfully completed BALOO.  If your pack is planning a camping trip during the coming year, make sure a pack representative attends this training. BALOO covers camping, outdoor activities, games, ceremonies, selecting & using camping equipments, health & safety, campfire programs, cooking, and more.  (5 hr)  Registration form.

Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders Training – for Webelos Den Leaders and assistants.

This supplemental training course gives Webelos den leaders information and hands-on practice in the outdoor skills needed to work with Webelos Scouts.  Recommended prior to conducting a Webelos den overnight campout. You will learn about knots, wood tools, first aid, fire building, site selections, tents, bedding, weather, cooking, sanitation, flag ceremonies, campfire planning, Webelos badge activities, helpful Webelos Woods hints, and more.  This training in conjunction with Cub Scout Leader Specific Training for the Webelos leader, and YPT are required for the Webelos leader to be considered trained.  (overnight campout)  Registration form.

Safe Swim Defense & Safety Afloat – for all leaders planning aquatic activities

Safe Swim Defense – Instructs on the importance of advanced preparation and planning in preventing accidents and maintaining safety during any swimming activity.  online

Safety Afloat – Instructs on the planning, training, and preparation required for any activity using watercraft.  online

Hazardous Weather Training – for all leaders planning outdoor activities

Scout leaders should always help their Scouts to be prepared for all types of weather.  The National Council offers an online weather training called, "Are You Weather Smart?"  Go  online to learn about severe weather safety or begin other training regarding health and safety matters.  Floods, lightning, high winds and many other threats are reviewed.

Severe weather cannot be prevented, but Scouts and leaders can be adequately prepared for most situations in the outdoors.  The health and safety of all youth members and adult volunteer leaders is the council's highest priority.

Climb On Safely
Climb on Safely covers BSA's recommended procedures for conducting all climbing/rappelling activities.  The eight points - qualified supervision, discipline, physical fitness, safe area, equipment, planning, environmental conditions, and qualified instruction - help ensure the safety and well-being of participants.

Risk Management

There are many things as Scout leaders we need to know and practice in order to be safe and manage our risks. This training is designed to prepare leaders to conduct Scouting activities in a safe and prudent manner in accordance with the "Guide to Safe Scouting" and the National Guidelines. It is recommended that you take this training every 2 years. (90 min)

Trainer Development Conference

The Trainer Development Conference is part of the continuous process of updating trainers with the latest methods, principles, and technologies of training.  All district training team members, pack/troop trainers, Roundtable staff, and commissioner trainers are encouraged to attend.  If you are interested in becoming a district or a pack trainer, you are also encouraged to attend.  Topics will include: Why we train leaders, how adults learn, communications, characteristics of a good trainer, planning, arrangements and training technology, methods, and pizzazz.  Participants should include those individuals that will be delivering training to leaders and youth in all parts of the Scouting program.  Featured is hands-on presentation skills in small groups plus some exciting interactive learning games.  more

Roundtable (for all leaders)

Roundtable is meeting for Boy Scout and Cub Scout leaders typically held the first Thursday of every month.  Do you sometimes feel that you are not receiving all the information that Council and District is giving out? There may be a simple solution to your problem; attend Roundtable!

Roundtables are very informative and can be used as an asset to your unit. In the future, please try to send someone from your unit to monthly Roundtables. The information gap will dramatically shrink if you do.

The purpose of Roundtable is to help units succeed by providing useful program ideas, information on policy, leadership training, and current information on upcoming Council and District events and training opportunities. Roundtables are the best way to find out what's going on!  Equally importantly, Roundtable participants have an opportunity to meet other Scouters and enjoy the fellowship that makes Scouting fun.
